Turn It Off Unplug It and Wait

A Simple Fix That Often Works: Turn It Off, Unplug It, and Wait

Technology can sometimes behave in strange ways. Your printer might stop responding, your scanner won’t connect, or a device that worked perfectly yesterday suddenly refuses to cooperate.

Before assuming something is broken, there’s a very simple trick that often fixes the problem.

Turn the device off, unplug it from the power, wait a few minutes, then plug it back in and turn it on again.

It might sound almost too simple, but this technique solves a surprising number of technology problems.

Why This Works

Many electronic devices — printers, routers, computers, smart TVs and others — are essentially small computers.

Like any computer, they can occasionally get “stuck” or confused internally. A process might freeze, memory can get tied up, or a connection might stop responding properly.

When you unplug a device and leave it for a few minutes, you allow it to fully reset its internal electronics. When you power it back on, it starts fresh.

Think of it as giving the device a clean slate.

Why You Should Unplug It (Not Just Turn It Off)

Simply pressing the power button sometimes isn’t enough.

Some devices still keep parts of their system running even when switched off. By unplugging the power completely, you ensure everything fully shuts down.

Waiting about five minutes allows the internal components to fully reset before restarting.

When This Is Especially Helpful

This simple reset often works when:

  • A printer suddenly won’t print
  • A scanner can’t be found by the computer
  • A device freezes or stops responding
  • Wi-Fi connections behave strangely
  • A screen or program gets stuck

I see this regularly when helping people with printers. Something appears to be seriously wrong, but after unplugging the printer for a few minutes and starting it again, everything works normally.

A Good First Step When Something Isn’t Working

When technology misbehaves, it’s easy to feel frustrated or worry that something expensive has broken.

But in many cases, the issue is simply that the device needs a quick reset.

So if something isn’t working, try this first:

  1. Turn the device off.
  2. Unplug the power cable.
  3. Wait about five minutes.
  4. Plug it back in and turn it on again.

You might be surprised how often that solves the problem.

When You Might Need More Help

Of course, this won’t fix every issue. Sometimes devices need settings adjusted, software updated, or connections reconfigured.

If you’ve tried restarting the device and things still aren’t working properly, that’s when a bit of extra help can make things much easier.
