The problem
A client contacted me because their TCL smart TV suddenly stopped connecting to the internet. The TV said the Wi-Fi connection was “Limited”, even though the internet was working perfectly on phones, tablets, and computers.
This can be very frustrating, especially when everything else in the house is working as it should.
What we tried first
We worked through all the usual steps that normally fix Wi-Fi problems:
- Turning the TV off and back on
- Disconnecting and reconnecting the Wi-Fi
- Restarting the modem and router
- Unplugging the TV from the power for several minutes
- Checking that the TV’s software was fully up to date
- Clearing the cache on the TV’s network-related apps
Unfortunately, none of these steps solved the problem.
The unexpected cause
The issue turned out to be something most people would never think to check — the date and time settings on the TV.
At some point, the TV’s clock had been changed from automatic time to a manually set time zone. This was done because the clock was showing the wrong time due to daylight saving changes. While the time on the screen looked correct, the TV was no longer able to properly verify its internet connection.
This caused the confusing “Limited connection” error.
The simple fix
Once the TV’s clock was switched back to automatic date and time synchronisation, the Wi-Fi connected immediately and started working normally again.
No new equipment was needed, and nothing was broken — it was simply a settings issue.
How to check this on your TV
If your smart TV shows a “Limited connection” error, try this:
- Open Settings on your TV
- Go to Date & Time
- Set the clock to Automatic
- Restart the TV
In many cases, this alone will fix the problem.
